On Tuesday, Royal Enfield unveiled its two motorcycles- the Interceptor 650 Twin and the Continental GT 650 Twin, at EICMA 2017 motor show held in Milan, Italy. This is the first time that the company has unveiled motorcycles having parallel-twin engine. Royal Enfield is expected to launch the two motorcycles soon across markets in 2018.
Both the Interceptor and the Continental motorcycles look great and bring back the memories of the Interceptor Mark 1. Both of these new Royal Enfield motorcycles share the same chassis and engine. The Interceptor 650 Twin is more like an old-school style motorcycle while the Continental GT 650 Twin is like a full-blown cafe racer style.
The Interceptor and the Continental almost fully are different from each other. As per Royal Enfield, these two bikes are 5 per cent similar to one another. Siddhartha Lal, Royal Enfield CEO said in the EICMA event that the bikes are in the last stage of production and one can expect that the device might be launched in few markets starting from April 2018 and then will be launched in other global geographies through the year. He added that the bikes will initially be launched in Europe by April 1018 and then in India within the first half of the year 2018. Later, the bikes will be launched in the other locations.
Both, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 Twin and Continental GT 650 Twin are powered by a 648cc twin-cycle engine with a 2700 degree firing order and air-cooled. The engine was developed in Leicestershire, England in the Royal Enfield technology centre in collaboration with the new Bruntingthorpe facility of the firm’s US staff and the company’s team in Chennai. The bike maker further said that the engine of the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 Twin and Continental GT 650 Twin will serve as the firm’s legacy and character into modern context.
These two bikes are said to be a direct competition to the Harley-Davidson Inc. in terms of the mid-sized motorcycle category in India.
