Tesla’s Chinese Partner, Tencent Holdings Ltd. has developed an autonomous driving system, a new report has revealed. There was already news that Tencent was working on developing such a technology with its announcement of a partnership with Guangzhou Auto in the month of September. This driverless car technology was one of the focuses of the deal.
As per a report by Bloomberg on Tuesday, Tencent has advanced as far as prototyping its own autonomous driving system. The company is best known for developing the famous WeChat messaging application. Besides this, Tencent is also a major investor in ride sharing giant Didi Chuxing, which has its own autonomous driving lab in the United Sates- and Tesla.
Now it looks like Tencent is pushing itself more into coming up with its own self driving technology. This would make the company pit against Baidu Inc who has invested billions of dollars on AI and driving research and has plans to bring autonomous vehicles on the roads by the year 2018.
In the month of September this year, Baidu said that it has invested $1.5 billion into its own development of autonomous car technology to compete against Tesla. Both, Baidu and Tencent are investors in Nio, which is an electric-vehicle startup owned by Chinese internet entrepreneur William Li, that aims to launch an autonomous car in the United States by the year 2020.
The autonomous car technology is one of the key spaces that could help the Chinese developers get a better position globally. Ma Huateng, Tencent Chairman had said in the month of March that he wants the company to develop an AI-based technology in order to have driverless cars in the future. But the big question that pops up now is if Tencent’s developed autonomous driving technology will fit into the investment and research and if the technology will help to provide a boost or a competition.
